Your Guide for Choosing the Right Blinds for Your Space.

When it comes to window dressing, the array of options can be overwhelming. Here at Poppy Love, we specialise in crafting quality bespoke curtains, blinds, cushions, and soft furnishings for customers throughout Surrey and Berkshire. One of the questions we are often asked is,  "which type of blinds should I go for?" In this blog, we consider some of the options available.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds, with their horizontal slats crafted from materials such as wood or aluminium. They are a timeless window treatment option. Not only do they exude elegance, but they also offer practical benefits that can enhance the ambience of any room.

These bespoke blinds give you the power to fine-tune the amount of natural light entering your space. With a simple tilt of the slats, you can create the perfect lighting for any occasion, from welcoming the morning sun to setting a cosy evening mood. Keeping them pristine is a breeze – a quick wipe is all it takes.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds, known for their fabric that gracefully folds into itself when raised, are a sophisticated addition to your living room or bedroom decor. These blinds offer an ideal solution to create a specific atmosphere in your living space.

With a wide array of fabric choices, you can effortlessly customise Roman blinds to harmonise with your room's unique style. Whether you're aiming for a cosy and inviting ambience in your bedroom or a chic and stylish look in your living room, Roman blinds offer the versatility to match your interior design aspirations.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds, characterised by their straightforward design of a single piece of fabric that rolls up or down, offer a budget-friendly and versatile window treatment option. They're particularly well-suited for use in kitchens and bathrooms, where practicality meets style. Additionally, roller blinds can be crafted from moisture-resistant materials, making them a smart choice for areas prone to condensation.

Vertical Blinds

These blinds hang vertically, making them a good fit for larger windows or sliding doors. They can be drawn back entirely for a full view or rotated to let in just the right amount of light.

Pleated Blinds

Pleated blinds bring a touch of modern elegance with their sleek, single-piece pleated fabric. Their versatility shines in various settings, and they truly excel in challenging spaces like conservatories or uniquely shaped windows. Whether aiming for a contemporary aesthetic or needing a practical solution for those hard-to-fit windows, pleated blinds effortlessly combine style and functionality.

Not only do pleated blinds offer a chic aesthetic, but they also come with many practical benefits. Their innovative design ensures that they fold neatly when raised, allowing you to enjoy an unobstructed view. Additionally, the insulating properties of pleated fabric help regulate temperature, keeping your space comfortable year-round. Choose pleated blinds to infuse your home with modern sophistication without compromising on ease of use and comfort.

Blackout Blinds

Blackout blinds are the ultimate choice for creating a serene and peaceful environment in your home. They are specifically designed to reduce light penetration, making them an excellent addition to bedrooms and nurseries where restful sleep and daytime naps are a priority.

These blinds are similar in appearance to roller blinds, but what sets them apart is their unique fabric composition. Crafted from special materials that block out light completely, blackout blinds provide unparalleled light control. Whether it's early morning sunshine or the glare of streetlights at night, you can trust blackout blinds to keep your room comfortably dark at any time. Transform your sleeping spaces into tranquil sanctuaries with the help of blackout blinds.

Motorised Blinds

Motorised blinds offer an innovative solution to enhance your living space. With the ability to be operated effortlessly via remote control or even your smartphone, they bring a touch of sophistication to your home.

Motorised blinds provide a level of convenience that traditional blinds can't match. Whether you're adjusting the blinds to let in the morning sunlight or creating a cosy ambience in the evening, you can do it all with the touch of a button. While motorised blinds may be a more premium option, many homeowners find the added convenience and the ability to effortlessly tailor their home's lighting and privacy well worth the investment. Elevate your living space with the modern touch of motorised blinds, where your home truly reflects your lifestyle.

Conclusion

Choosing blinds for your home is two-fold. Not only is it about function, it is also about setting the atmosphere in your home. Whether you are looking for the practicality of Venetians or the elegance of Roman blinds, there are many options available to suit all tastes.

If you are looking to install bespoke handmade blinds to your home, whether for a touch of luxury or for more practical reasons, Poppy Love makes handmade bespoke blind and curtains for customers throughout Berkshire and Surrey.

Rust-colored curtains framing a window with white blinds and autumn trees outside
By Kim Young • October 14, 2026
As the evenings draw in and the trees change to copper and gold, our thoughts naturally turn to making our homes feel warmer and more enveloping. One of the most effective ways to do this is through layering your window dressings, combining curtains, blinds and pelmets to create depth, richness and a sense of occasion that a single treatment simply can't achieve. Why Layer for Autumn? A layered window isn't just about looks; it's about function too. Autumn brings cooler mornings, unpredictable light and draughtier evenings, and layering gives you far greater control over all three. Warmth: an extra layer of fabric traps air and reduces heat loss through glass. Light control: a blind can filter low autumn sun without sacrificing privacy. Visual richness: combining textures adds a tailored, finished look no single curtain or blind can match. For period homes across Farnham, Odiham and Hartley Wintney, layering also respects the architecture; dressing a window properly, the way it was originally intended to be dressed. Starting with the Base Layer: Blinds. The foundation of a beautifully layered window is usually a well-fitted blind. A Roman blind in a warm wool-mix or textured linen sits neatly within the recess, offering precise control of light and privacy day to day. Choose tonal, muted shades this season. Rust, ochre, moss and deep terracotta all work beautifully against the low golden light of autumn afternoons. A recent client in Fleet chose a soft burnt-orange herringbone Roman blind for her study, which now glows beautifully whenever the afternoon sun streams through. Adding Curtains for Depth and Drama. Once the blind is in place, curtains bring softness, movement and a sense of luxury. Full-length, interlined curtains in a heavier fabric, think brushed cotton, wool blends or a lush velvet. These fabrics add real substance to a room as the temperatures drop. Fabric ideas for autumn curtains: Deep-pile velvet in aubergine, bottle green or burnt sienna Textured wool or bouclé for a tactile, cosy finish Warm-toned linen union for a softer, more relaxed layer Interlining is particularly worth considering this time of year. It doesn't just improve the drape and weight of a curtain, it also adds an extra thermal barrier against chilly window glass. The Finishing Touch: Pelmets. A pelmet is the detail that elevates a layered window from lovely to truly polished. It conceals the curtain heading and blind mechanism, creates a clean line across the top of the window, and adds an architectural finish that feels bespoke rather than off-the-peg. For a Camberley client with tall Victorian sash windows, we designed a box pelmet upholstered in a deep forest-green wool, edged with a subtle contrast braid. Paired with ivory Roman blinds and curtains in a complementary check, the result felt considered, warm and entirely tailored to the room. Pelmets work particularly well where: You want to hide curtain poles or blind headrails for a neater finish The window is a focal point deserving of extra detail You're working with high ceilings that benefit from a strong horizontal line Coordinating Without Overcomplicating. Layering doesn't mean everything needs to match exactly. In fact, the most elegant schemes rely on subtle contrast. Pair a plain blind with a patterned curtain, or a bold pelmet fabric with simpler curtains beneath. The key is choosing colours from the same palette so each layer feels connected rather than competing. A good rule of thumb: pick one dominant tone, one supporting neutral, and one textural accent, then let each window dressing take on a different role within that palette. Why Layering Suits Bespoke Homes. Layered window dressings are rarely off-the-shelf. Getting the proportions, headings and finishes right so the blind sits neatly behind the curtain, and the pelmet is scaled correctly to the window; This takes careful measuring and a practised eye. This is exactly where a bespoke, handmade approach makes all the difference, rather than relying on standard sizes that rarely fit period or characterful windows precisely. Ready to Layer Your Windows for Autumn? Layering curtains, blinds and pelmets is one of the most rewarding ways to bring warmth, texture and craftsmanship into your home this autumn.
