Blinds or Curtains: Choosing What's Right for Each Room.

Kim Young • June 20, 2026

Every room in your home has its own personality and its window dressing should reflect that. Whether you're drawn to the clean lines of a Roman blind or the soft elegance of a floor-length curtain, choosing between the two isn't always straightforward. Here's how to think it through, room by room.

It's Not One or the Other.

One of the most common misconceptions we encounter when visiting clients across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire is the idea that a home must be all curtains or all blinds. In reality, the most beautifully dressed homes tend to mix both using each where it genuinely works best.

The key is understanding what each room needs: privacy, light control, atmosphere, practicality, or a combination of all four.

Living Rooms: Where Curtains Come Into Their Own.

In a living room, curtains often reign supreme and with good reason. A pair of full-length, beautifully lined curtains frames a window with warmth and elegance that a blind simply cannot replicate. In summer, lightweight fabrics in soft linens or woven cottons allow light to filter through gently while still defining the space.

We recently worked with a client in Camberley whose sitting room faced south-west, flooding the room with afternoon light. We chose an interlined linen in a soft sage, hand-stitched to fall in generous pools on the floor. The result was effortlessly sophisticated and beautifully cool on warm evenings.

When curtains work best in living rooms:

  • Large, statement windows where proportion matters
  • Period or traditional interiors that call for softness and texture
  • Rooms where you want to create a cosy, enveloping atmosphere

Kitchens and Bathrooms: Blinds Take the Lead.

In practical spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, blinds are usually the smarter choice. They sit neatly within the window recess, stay clear of worktops and sinks, and are far easier to wipe clean. Roman blinds in particular with their structured folds and fabric-forward aesthetic bring a sense of considered style to a kitchen without overwhelming it.

For a recently renovated kitchen in Fleet, we made a set of Roman blinds in a soft geometric weave that tied the cabinetry colours together beautifully. Simple, precise and completely bespoke no off-the-shelf sizing, no compromise.

When blinds work best:

  • Kitchens, utility rooms and bathrooms where practicality is key
  • Smaller windows where curtains would feel heavy or intrusive
  • Contemporary interiors where clean lines are a priority

Bedrooms: The Case for Both.

Bedrooms are perhaps the most rewarding rooms to dress well and often the most versatile. Many of our clients in the Hampshire and Berkshire area choose to layer a fitted roller or blackout blind behind full curtains, giving them both light control and a luxurious, finished look.

This approach works especially well in summer, when long evenings and early mornings make effective light exclusion essential. The blind does the practical work; the curtains bring the drama and softness.

Bay Windows: A Special Consideration.

Bay windows present their own questions. Curtains can be hung across the full bay for a sweeping, theatrical effect, or individual blinds can be fitted within each section to preserve the architectural detail. Neither is wrong, it depends entirely on the style of your home and how you use the space.

We always recommend a home consultation for bay windows, as measurements and fitting methods vary considerably. See our advice on dressing bay windows beautifully for more guidance.

Bay windows are one of the most coveted architectural features a home can have, offering light, depth, and sense of space. And yet, they are also one of the trickiest windows to dress well. Get it wrong and even the most stunning bay can feel cluttered, awkward or simply unfinished. This spring, if you have been looking at your bay window and wondering how to make it truly sing, you are in the right place. At Poppy Love, we work with homeowners across Camberley, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire to create bespoke curtain and blind solutions that honour the unique shape and character of every bay window beautifully.
